Abstract

1338234 Bearings GLYCO-METALL-WERKE DAELEN & LOOS GmbH 10 Dec 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 58673/70 Heading F2A A bearing member has a backing member 1 in one surface of which are a plurality of cavities in which is a filling of at least one fusible synthetic resin, the filling and support being covered with a bearing layer containing at least one fusible synthetic resin and particles of solid lubricant. The backing member is preferably of metal, e.g. steel on to which a porous metal layer, e.g. of bronze is sintered. The fusible synthetic resins are preferably thermoplastic fluoropolymers whose melting ranges are in the region of the peak temperatures to be expected on the surface of the bearing during operation. The lubricant additives are not fusible at the operating temperature and may be particles of bronze, graphite or high molecular weight PTFE. The bearing member is made by spraying a metal strip 11 which has been coated with a porous metal layer 12 with a pulverant filling material 3 and heating the strip with an infra-red heater 17 to cause the material to be drawn into the pores. The strip is then sprayed with the bearing material, also in pulverant form, and the strip again heated by an infra-red heater to melt the material on to the strip. The strip is compressed by a pair of rollers 20, 21 and cooled by a water spray 22 and wound on to a mandrel 15.
