Abstract

1338026 Carrier bag handles WINDMÍLLER & HÍLSCHER 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970 4 Nov 1970] 24073/71 Heading A4G A carrier bag handle is formed by folding over towards the centre the end portions 1, 2 Fig.3, of a plastics strip Figs.1, 2 (not shown), applying vacuum cups 5 to the free ends of the end portions 1, 2, and rotating through 90 degrees in opposite senses the end portions 1, 2 and vacuum cups 5 about axes perpendicular to the plane of the strip and adjacent the free ends thereof to form a U- shaped handle Fig.4 (not shown), the base of the U moving progressively away from said axes, the distance between said two axes, A, being equal to the distance between the centre lines of the U-legs 8. The strips may be severed from a plastics web (10), Fig.5 (not shown) having folded-over side edges (15, 16) provided with continuous adhesive layers (13, 14) and lines of weakness (18). Handles may be formed in pairs from a double width web (19), Fig.6 (not shown) additionally provided with a double width central continuous adhesive layer (22), the web being severed along the centre line (23) of the central adhesive layer (22). To form bags, handles 9, Fig.7 are adhered by the adhesive parts 13', 14' thereof to a plastics bag web 24, the web 24 having perforations 25. The bag web is folded about lines 26-30 to form a tubing with side gussets, which is welded at a side seam (33) Fig.8, (not shown). Bags are severed from the tubing by transverse cuts along lines passing through the perforations 25. Each bag is closed by a welded bottom seam (35), Fig. 8 (not shown). Before attaching the handle to the bag web, the handle may be adhered to a plastics reinforcing sheet (136), Fig.10 (not shown) provided with an adhesive covering (37) which is subsequently adhered to the bag web 24.
