Abstract

1337723 Three-dimensional fabrics COTTON SILK & MAN-MADE FIBRES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 26 Nov 1970 [29 Nov 1969] 58455/69 Headings D1K, E A three-dimensional fabric comprises an array of horizontal parallel ground warps GW, a series of wefts W formed of a continuous thread and laid one above the other between successive horizontal layers of ground warps, and binder warps BW extending vertically between vertical layers of ground warp and between successive vertical layers of wefts. The fabric may be of any cross-sectional shape for example rectangular or circular. The yarns used for the ground warp, binder warp and weft may be different or all the same and carbon fibre may be used. Weaving of the three-dimensional fabric is carried out as shown in Fig. 4. Ground warp GW let off a beam BG passes over a back rest RL and is split into a number of horizontal sheets separated by bars SBL 1-5 and SBR 1-5 which are arranged on pivoted frames (14) Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) controlled by a dobby so that the ground warp sheets are successively raised to allow the wefts W to be inserted in a vertical series between them. Binder warp BW is taken from a beam BB, and passes over a spring-biassed tension-controlling roller TB and through a heald HF, which is controlled to change the shed formed between the binder warp and the ground warp after the insertion of each complete vertical series of wefts W. Weft insertion. Weft is inserted by a shuttle S, Fig. 12 which is handed positively through the shed by two arms RA, RB pivoted on a member 74 and driven by links 78 connected to crankpins on a rotating gear wheel 80. Member 74 is attached to a lead screw 76 which is arranged to be raised and lowered in steps so that weft insertion takes place at different levels between successive horizontal sheets of ground warps. This is performed by a pallet mechanism (92) Fig. 13 (not shown) driven by appropriately timed cams (94, 96) and acting on a pegged plate 90 attached to a rotatable nut 88 through which lead screw 76 passes. Take-up motion. The woven fabric is taken up by two pairs of rollers 38 and 36 arranged horizontally and vertically respectively and mounted in pairs of plates 40, 54 so that the distance between them can be varied to accommodate fabrics of different size of cross-section. The rollers are driven by chains 70 from a shaft 62. Shedding. The binder warp heald frame HF is driven by cam groove 24, Fig. 9, in a rotating disc 18, through intermediate links 20, 28, 26. A dobby is used to control the ground warp separating bars SBR 1-5, SBL 1-5.
