Abstract

1337355 Automatic control of electrostatic charge; electro-photographic printing apparatus R C A CORPORATION 6 Jan 1972 [6 Jan 1971] 613/72 Headings G2H and G3R In electrostatic printing apparatus having a corona generating device applying charge to a surface, the charge is maintained at a desired value by varying the frequency or width of energizing pulses to the corona generating device. In an embodiment, an electro-photographic recording element 12, comprising a photoconductive layer 14 on a backing layer 16, is fed at constant speed between corona generating discharge wires 24, 26, which apply an electrostatic charge to the element, and past an exposure means (28) Fig.1 (not shown) utilizing a thin window cathode ray tube and a developing device (22) using liquid developer. A voltage proportional to the charge as measured by probe 34 is compared, with switch 70 in the position shown, with a desired value 76 in differential amplifier 74, any error being fed through switch 78 to vary the frequency of a free-running multivibrator 82, whose output pulses trigger a flipflop 84, having a preset output pulse width, to energize a shunt tube switch 96, the corona from corona generating wires 24, 26, fed from high voltage supply 98, being turned off when switch 96 is energized. With switch 70 in its alternative position, the pulse width of the flip-flop 84 is varied according to an error signal from amplifier 90, between the selected charge on the element 8 a desired reference 92, the multivibrator 82 running at a preset frequency. The multi-vibrator 82 and flip-flop 84 include triodes and variable resistances 80, 86 Fig.4 (not shown) to vary the frequency of pulse width, reversibly driven by motors according to the error signal from amplifiers 74, 90 respectively. The shunt tube switch 96 comprises a triode shorting the positive supply terminal i.e. discharge wire 24 to earth in response to a pulse from flip-flop 84. The reference valves 76, 92 may be adjustable, and discharge wire 24 replaced by a plate in contact with backing layer 16.
