Abstract

1337329 Finely divided active silica DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 19 April 1971 [31 Jan 1970] 20237/71 Heading C1A Finely divided, highly active silica is obtained by precipitating silica with acid from an alkali metal silicate solution, filtering off the silica and producing silica with a residual moisture content of 5-15% by weight (if necessary by means of heating), grinding the silica and heat treating the finely divided silica at 700‹ to 1000‹ C. for 1 to 10 seconds, preferably < 2 seconds, in a free-fall shaft in counter-current to a dry gas stream inert with respect to silica (e.g. air). A typical product of the above process is the novel, finely divided, highly active silica having isolated silanol groups (incapable of H-bonding) in its active surface but being completely free from adsorbed water and closely adjacent silanol groups (capable of hydrogen bonding), and having a silanol group density not exceeding 3À33 SiOH/100Š<SP>2</SP>(30Š<SP>2</SP>/SiOH), preferably 0À5 to 2À5 SiOH/100Š<SP>2</SP>.
