Abstract

1368685 Purifying gases BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 14 Jan 1972 [16 Jan 1971] 1787/72 Heading C1A Mercury and/or oxygen impurities are removed from gases containing them, especially hydrogen by treatment with an adsorbent consisting of an aluminium oxide carrier containing copper. The aluminium oxide carrier has an internal surface area of from 100 to 300 m.<2>/g., a pore volume of from 0À5 to 0À8 cm.<3>/g. and an average pore dia. of from 40 to 80 Š. The copper content of the adsorbent is preferably 0À5 to 40% by wt. and the process is carried out at a temperature of from 0‹ to 120‹ C. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of hydrogen obtained from mercury cell electrolysis of alkali metal chlorides and the adsorbent is regenerated by passing a stream of hydrogen through the adsorbent at temperatures of 180‹ to 400‹ C., preferably 200‹ to 220‹ C.
