Abstract

1335045 Rotary piston machine A E BROWN 17 Oct 1970 49418/70 Heading F1F A rotary fluid displacement machine useable as a compressor, a vacuum pump or an expansion engine or motor comprises rotors 1, 2 in a casing 5 having intersecting bores 3, 4 provided with a port 21 for inlet when the machine is acting as a compressor and an outlet port 25 in at least one end of the bore 3. The rotors are interconnected by gearing to rotate in timed relation normally 1 : 1 and the casing has coolant passages. The first rotor 1 has an intermediate hub portion 7 and end projecting portions or bands formed by discs 9 bolted and chanelled thereto at 10, 11. A groove 12 is formed in the rotor through the portions and adjacent a tooth 8 projecting from the hub 7. The second rotor 2 has major and minor hubs 13, 15 having a groove 17 adjacent teeth 14, 16 extending therefrom. The teeth 8, 14 and 16 are profiled as described in detail so that there is zero clearance volume, no trapped fluid pockets and no unbroken seal lines as the rotors rotate to effect their various functions. The rotors are balanced by holes 40, 42 and the teeth 14, 16 are lightened by holes 44 while the motor 1 may be provided with notches 32 to provide more flow area tothe ports 25 which in turn are shaped as described in detail to produce different effects and for various uses the grooves in the different sections of the rotors may lead and lag one another. The outer edge E of the rotor 2 is constituted by a brass wear strip 36 which is adjustable relative to the rotor by means of shims and screws 37. Seal grooves 35 or a ductile coating may be provided to reduce the running clearance without causing seizure. In possible modifications the discs and hubs may deviate from circular arcs by having surfaces of compound radii. Two diametrically opposite teeth may be provided on one or both rotors in the former case the two toothed rotor rotating at half the speed of the other.
