Abstract

1334597 Determination of metals MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 10 May 1971 [1 July 1970] 14102/71 Heading B1X The composition of metallic material is determined by connecting a sample 1 as an ansole in an electrolysis circuit in which electrolyte, such as sulphuric acid, is carried by an absorbent substance such as a stack of filter papers 2 and in which the cathode 4 is of material, e.g. lead, which is resistant to the electrolyte. The electrolyte is such that metals in the sample dissolve in it so that coloured oxides are formed on the filter paper, and the resultant colour is compared with the colours of, reference samples freshly prepared by passing the same quantity of electricity through similar absorbent material, impregnated with the same electrolyte and with known quantities of a salt or salts of one or more metals, arranged between the cathode 4 and a platinum plate. Colour-developing agents may be used, e.g. dimethylgloxine for nickel oxide and potassium xanthegenate for molybdenum oxide.
