Abstract

1,189,221. Solid electrolyte bodies with impregnated electrodes. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 9 March, 1967 [11 March, 1966], No. 11235/67. Heading H1B. In a fuel cell the electrolyte is a solid body of oxygen-ion conducting material and the anode is of copper or copper alloy impregnated within a porous surface layer of the electrolyte body. The anode is prepared by impregnating the porous layer with a solution or melt of a copper salt or mixture of copper salt and a salt of the alloy metal, and reducing the solution or melt to copper or the alloy. In examples, a ZrO 2 /Y 2 O 3 (92/8 mol. per cent) solid electrolyte body with a porous surface layer is impregnated with saturated Cu(NO 3 ) 2 (Ex. 1), or Cu(NO 3 ) 2 /Ni(NO 3 ) 2 (Ex. 3), or Cu(NO 3 ) 2 / AgNO 3 (Ex. 4), and the salt is roasted to the oxide at 500‹ C., or with a copper tetramine hydroxide (Ex. 2) which is roasted at 400‹ C.; the oxide is reduced with fuel gas in the cell or with H 2 at 400‹ C.
