The heat exchanger, which contains an intermediate heat transfer medium, e.g. liquid lead, is mounted below the reactor. A reduction in pressure in either the helium or reaction mixture ducts associated with the exchanger includes a column of lead to rise and seal that duct. Helium from the reactor 21 passes along the ducts 25, 26 to the section 22a of the exchanger 22. Liquid lead in the exchanger prevents contact between the helium and the reaction gases in the duets 27, 28 and section 22b while effecting a heat transfer between the two.
