Abstract

1332626 Grinding PAUL ERNST MASCHINENFABRIK 20 June 1972 [22 July 1971] 28801/72 Heading B3D A belt sander for polishing or grinding a workpiece 14; Fig. 1a comprises an endless polishing or grinding belt 1 entrained about pulleys 2, 3, means 15 for moving a workpiece under the belt for working contact over the entire width of the workpiece, and magnetic means 10, 12, Fig. 2, for moving the belt against the workpiece. The belt 1 runs over a guiding pulley 4 and a band 12 of non-magnetic material entrained about the pulleys 2, 3, the band carrying a plurality of magnets of one polarity. A plurality of carriers 9 each having a magnet 10 of the same polarity, are mounted on the rods 11 of pneumatic piston-and-cylinder devices 7 secured to a bar 6. The workpiece 14 is conveyed by a belt 15 beneath the grinding belt 1 in a direction transverse to the direction of the belt 1. Each device- 7 is associated with a respective switch 20 which is actuated by the leading edge of the workpiece, and after a suitable time delay, actuates its device to lower its carrier 9 and press the grinding belt against the workpiece. The magnets, being of the same polarity, repel each other so that the carriers 9 are normally removed from contact with the band 12. In a similar embodiment, the workpiece is moved in the same direction as the grinding belt the carriers being arranged across the width of the belt. In another embodiment, the grinding belt 21, Fig. 5, runs over a steel band 24 and a plurality of solenoids 28 are disposed beneath the upper run of a belt conveyer 26. Each solenoid is actuated by a respeetive switch 30 operated by the workpiece 20 so as to urge the steel band, and hence the grinding belt, against the workpiece. In a similar embodiment, permanent magnets are mounted beneath the upper run of the conveyer belt on the rods of piston-and-cylinder devices actuatedby switches operated by the workpiece to raise the magnets so as to attract the steel band and draw it and the grinding belt against the workpiece.
