Abstract

1332247 Photopolymerizing water-soluble monomers BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK AG 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970] 22787/71 Heading C3P In the preparation of water-soluble polymers by radiation-induced polymerization of aqueous solutions of unsaturated monomers which yield water-soluble polymers, optionally with up to 15 weight per cent of comonomers which yield polymers which are sparingly soluble in water, and at least 50% w./w. aqueous solution of the monomer is irradiated with photochemically active radiation while in the form of a layer of thickness not exceeding 2 cm. supported on a substrate which is moving across the beam of radiation. The substrate may be an endless belt, the temperature of which may be controlled in a radiation zone. The monomer may be acrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, an olefinically unsaturated sulphonic acid or an N-vinyl lactam. Photopolymerization initiators, e.g. vicinal ketaldonyl compounds, uranyl salts and peroxide/variable valence metal systems; and solid substances which decompose at 60 to 110‹ C., e.g. ammonium bicarbonate; may also be present. In an example N-vinyl pyrrolidone is polymerized in aqueous solution in the presence of benzoin isopropyl ether, the solution being gassed with nitrogen, poured on to an endless metal belt and irradiated with light from fluorescent lamps. In the final stage the belt is cooled to - 20‹ C. whereby the viscous polymer is solidified and separated from the belt as it passes over the return roller. The products may be used as flocculants and in pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations.
