Abstract

1310729 Preparing water-soluble acrylic polymers RHONE-PROGIL 12 Oct 1970 [22 Oct 1969] 48424/70 Heading C3P The preparation of water-soluble acrylic polymers or copolymers in the solid state is effected by depositing an aqueous solution of the corresponding acrylic monomer or monomers, containing a photopolymerization initiator and having a pH of at least 8, in the form of a layer or as discrete droplets on a water-repellent support, irradiating the layer or droplets with light of wavelength 1500 to 5000 Š, and removing the resulting acrylic polymer from the support. The preparation can be effected continuously (e.g. on a movable support) or discontinuously. If necessary, the polymer is dried before being removed from the support. Suitable photoinitiators include diacetyl, dibenzoyl, benzophenone, benzoin and benzoin alkyl ethers. A UV absorber may optionally be present. Monomers specified are acrylic and methacrylic acids and their amides, nitriles, esters and salts, e.g. acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile. The acrylic polymers are useful as flocculating agents and thickeners.
