Abstract

1330803 Crimping fabric and yarn J P STEVENS & CO Inc 30 March 1972 [27 May 1971] 14917/72 Headings D1F and D1S Thermoplastic textile material, e.g. woven or knitted fabric or yarns made of nylon, acrylics or polypropylene, is crimped by passing the material 6 between crimping elements 1, 2, the element 1 being a heated engraved roll and the element 2 being an unheated embossed element, and the material 6 is supported in the depressions of the element 2 until the thermoplastic material has reached its setting point. Preferably, the element 2 is a roll and may be an endless belt and is at least 100‹F cooler than the roll 1. The roll 1 is made of metal and the roll 2 may be made of comminuted wool and cotton which is compressed, moistened and run with the roll 1 until the desired embossing is effected by the engraving. The roll may be cooled by the circulation of a coolant therethrough. In addition, external cooling, e.g. a cold air blast, may be applied to the crimped material. A guide roll 5 or bar supports the material in the depressions during cooling and is positioned so that the material 6 is supported by the periphery of the roll 2 over an arc at least ten times the arc over which crimping takes place. Outfeed rolls 3, 4 are provided.
