Abstract
1330192 Surgical implants C H SPARKS 8 Oct 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 47062/71 Heading A5R An assembly 25 for implanting in a living body to grow a graft tube comprises a flexible mandrel 26 having a smooth outer surface, and inner and outer fabric tubes 27, 28 on the mandrel. The inner tube 27 is of coarser mesh fabric than the outer tube 28, and in both cases the fabric is impregnated with vulcanised silicone rubber. The mandrel 26 is of silicone rubber. There are spaces between the inner tube 27 and the mandrel 26, and between inner and outer tubes 27, 28, and connective tissues grow into these spaces when the graft tube is forming. When the graft tube is fully formed, the mandrel 26 is withdrawn and the graft tube is connected to other tubes as desired, e.g. in the anastomosis of an incompetent artery section. The assembly 25 is placed in the desired position inside the body by means of a tunnelling tube (11), Fig. 2 (not shown), which is open at both ends. Initially a core rod (13) with a rounded end (14) is placed inside the tube (11) with the rounded end (14) projecting from the distal opening, which is slightly inturned at (15). The tunnelling tube (11) is thus positioned inside the body, core rod (13) is removed from the tube (11) and replaced by the assembly 25. Tube (11) is then withdrawn, leaving assembly 25 in place.
