Abstract

1329687 Handling containers STOTHERT & PITT Ltd 7 Feb 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 4452/71 Heading E2B A twistlock device for use with containers of the I.S.O. and "Sealand" systems comprises a member, e.g. a shaft 6, having at one end a first engagement member 6b dimensioned for fitting into. I.S.O. type corner castings and a larger second engagement member 17 co-axial with the first engagement member 6b and dimensioned for fitting into "Sealand" type corner castings. When the twistlock device is used with an I.S.O. system only the first engagement member projects into the corner casting and, for locking, the said member is rotatable relative to the second engagement member. However, when the twistlock device is used with a "Sealand" system both members project into the corner casting and the members are coupled so that they rotate together for locking engagement with the corner casting of the second engagement member. In the construction shown the shaft 6 is mounted for rotation in a bearing 1 and the second engagement member 17 is mounted slidably thereon, the second engagement member 17 being spring loadably urged towards the first engagement member 6b. The shaft is rotated by a hydraulically actuated linkage, means being provided on the linkage for. the manual actuation thereof (Fig. 2, not shown). A probe 25 cooperates with the members to detect the position of the members when they are used with the different systems the arrangement being such that when the pertinent member has penetrated a sufficient distance into the respective corner casting the probe 25 through a linkage 31, 28, 29 operates a switch to cause the hydraulic actuation to commence and rotate the member through 90‹. On lifting the container the member moves into engagement with the corner casting this movement allowing the probe to pivot under its spring loading 33 so that the switch cannot be operated during the lifting operation. The shaft and bearing assembly is mounted in a slot in the frame of a load handling spreader so that the assembly can take up a correct position for either system.
