Abstract

1327894 Grinding NEWALL ENG CO Ltd and S W HOARE 2 Dec 1971 [23 Sept 1971] 44470/71 Heading B3D A machine for grinding a circular surface 47 on a workpiece 43 coaxial with a previously formed cylindrical surface 44 comprises a mandiel 22 including means 31-32, 35, 37 for providing a gas bearing between the mandrel 22 and the surface 44, and means 41, (42), Fig. 2 (not shown), for rotating the workpiece 43, including a rotary carrier 39, a face-plate 38 and magnets 48 for holding the workpiece 43 against the face-plate 38, the carrier 39 being supported on the mandrel 22 by a further gas bearing 33. Two similar mandrels 22, 23 are preferably provided for simultaneous grinding of respective workpieces 43, 43a, both carriers 39, 39a being driven by a common belt 41. Alternatively, Fig. 3, mandrels 53, 53a may support workpieces 68, 68a by internal surfaces 69, 69a, rotary carriers 63, 63a, havingmag netic means 67, 67a on face-plates 65, 65a, being provided with pulley grooves 64, 64a for driving.
