Abstract
1327307 Controlling gas burners SAUNIER DUVAL 20 April 1971 [24 April 1970] 10085/71 Heading F4T An apparatus for controlling the flow of gas to a water heater comprises a housing 4 divided by a membrane 5 into chambers 2 and 3 and having a gas inlet opening in the form of an orifice 6 and a gas outlet opening feeding a burner through a pipe 7 and being closed by a poppet valve 8 operated by a lever 12 connected to a differential membrane 10 in the water supply pipe against the bias of a spring 15 so that when water is drawn the valve 8 opens thereby reducing gas pressure in chamber 2 and the membrane 5 starts to fall under the weight of a suitably chosen counterweight 24, the admission of gas to the chamber 3 being controlled by a restriction 23 in a duct 17 to attenuate the rate of descent of membrane 5, and a valve 21 mounted beneath the membrane then opens first to progressively open the orifice 6 as a frusto-conical portion of a plug 20 above the valve 21 passes through the orifice and subsequently a second valve 22 in the form of an annular plate freely mounted about the plug 20 is pushed down to fully open orifice 6 by means of a crossbar 19 carried by the valve 21. On ceasing to draw water, valve 8 closes again and the membrane 5 rises to close valves 21 and 22. The counterweight 24 may be replaced by a spring. The invention is described as providing progressive admission of gas for ignition thereby preventing noisy or explosive ignition when water is drawn.
