Abstract

1326184 Infra-uterine contraceptive device and inserter G D SEARLE & CO 8 Jan 1971 [9 Jan 1970] 1006/71 Heading A5R An infra-uterine contraceptive device, Fig. 1, comprises a resilient, flexible bridge section 12 adapted to be bent about its mid-point and integral with two pairs of resilient flexible legs 13 formed symmetrically at is ends, the legs being of undulate configuration as shown, having free end portions 15 generally parallel with the bridge section 12 and each terminating in a generally spherical knob 14. A looped string 16 is attached at the centre of the bridge section and has a second looped string 17 attached at its free end, the first string 16 being substantially inert to the body while the second string 17 is decomposable under the action of body fluids. The knob 14 may be apertured and a string (30), Fig. 5 (not shown), decomposable after a length of time within the body, passed through each to retain the device in a generally pyramid configuration for use in a post-partum uterus, the string (30) releasing the legs after a period of time when the uterus has attained its normal size. An instrument 65, Fig. 8, ,to facilitate insertion of the device comprises a proximal tube 69 having flared end portions 72 adapted to telescopically receive a second, distal tube 70 and is provided with a plunger 68 of a length greater than that of the tubes 69, 70. In use, the contraceptive device 66 is placed at the proximal end of the tube 69, and the string 73 placed in and through the tube emerging at the distal end of the tube 70. A pull element 74, preferably a piece of split tubing, is removably placed at the extremity of the string 73 and the device 66 is drawn into and through the tube to the distal end portion of the tube 70, the bridge section being nearest the end of the tube and being folded about the point of attachment of the string 73, the legs being pushed together by the walls of the tube. The device may then be inserted via the distal end of the tube 70 by means of the plunger 68.
