Abstract

1324461 Photo-electric control of sewing machine SINGER CO 19 April 1971 [17 April 1970] 26753/71 Heading G1A [Also in Division D1] A photo-electric device controlling the steps of sewing a button hole (see Division D1) comprises a lamp 77, Fig. 5 a bunch 76 of fibre optic strands leading to a reflecting device 32, a second bunch 78 leading from the device 32 to a photo-sensitive device 79 comprising transistors connected as a super alpha pair. The reflecting device comprises a tyred wheel 50 journalled in a block slidable in an arm 37 secured to the sewing machine head Fig. 1 (not shown) and spring-biased into contact with the work. The rim of a boss on the wheel is provided with a fixed reflecting surface 69 and a second reflecting surface disposed on an arm 57 which can be moved around the periphery of the boss to vary the distance between the surfaces. The selected distance determines the length of the button hole, the wheel being turned by the passing material and light signals being sent to the device 79, as the reflecting surfaces pass under the end of the light guide 73 comprising the two bunches 76, 78 of fibre optic strands. Detector 79 is used to operate a solenoid 132 through a silicon controlled rectifier 146.
