Abstract

1324451 Rocking chairs PARKER-KNOLL Ltd 31 May 1972 [4 June 1971] 19046/71 Heading A4U A chair includes a rocking mechanism comprising a plate 10, secured to the chair base, and a plate 11, bolted to the chair seat, the plate 11 being rockable in the direction of the arrow A to an extent limited by a resilient hinge connection 14 and a biassing means 22. The hinge consists of a post 15 welded to the plate 11 and passing through an oversize hole 16 in the plate 10, upward rocking of the plate 11 being against the action of an annular resilient spacer 18 and an annular resilient member 19, held in compression between the plate 10 and a clamping nut 20. A plastics brush 17 slidable on the post 15 is located in the hole 16. The rocking movement is further controlled by the biasing means which comprises a second post 23 welded to the plate 11 at an indication thereto equal to half the maximum rocking angle and passing, as a sliding fit, through an aperture 24 in the plate 10, and through an annular block 25 of resilient material which is held under adjustable compression between the plate 10 and a stop nut 26. Stops limiting the rocking movement may be provided and a resilient annular spacer 28 prevents forward tipping. The resilient spacers 18, 28 and members 19, 25 are preferably made of rubber but may be helical coil springs. The fixed plate 10 may be secured to or form the end sections of a yoke by which the chair seat is connected to a pedestal base, the seat being adjustable in height, and a rocking mechanism may be provided centrally or at each side of the chair seat. In modifications an elongated strip of resilient material replaces the resilient spacers of two side-by-side hinge connections, which are controlled by one or more biasing means, or the posts of the hinge and biasing means are welded to different plates.
