1324361 Separating oil and water A GUY 20 July 1970 [18 April 1969] 19930/69 Heading B1D A mechanical oil separator for separating oil from a mixture of oil and a denser liquid comprises a casing having a central inlet pipe 3 into which the mixture is led with swirling action from inlet 1. At the top of the pipe 3 the liquid enters an initial separation chamber 5 wherein oil globules cling to the underside of perforated plate 6a before rising into the cover 7 and outlet 9. A heating coil 16 is present in the top of the chamber. The oilbearing water is then guided downwardly and radially through a series of slotted ring-like separating plates 23 in a cascade fashion by means of a series of annular plates 4 and 4a disposed vertically one over the other. The plates 4 abut the casing wall but have the inner rims spaced from pipe 3, whilst the plates 4a are spaced from the outer wall but abut the pipe. Oil which separates during the downward cascade passes upward through the frustoconical funnels 25 integral with the plates 4 and 4a and is thus unimpeded by the downward flow of the rest of the mixture. Water leaves the casing at 10, through a valve 20 which maintains a predetermined pressure in the casing. Any air which collects at the top of the casing is removed through valve 11 to a collector dish 14 designed to catch any liquid carried out with the air. Oil is released by electrically operated valve 19. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2 not shown), the plates 4 and 4a are each of the same diameter and reach from outer wall to pipe 3 but slots (21), (22) are incorporated alternately in the inner and outer sides of the plates to allow liquid passage.
