1322293 Centrifugal classifiers DONALDSON CO Inc 28 May 1971 [10 July 1970[ 17857/71 Heading B2P A classifier, in which powdered solids are classified according to size by the opposite actions of centrifugal force and an inwardly flowing elutriating fluid, comprises a housing 21, 23 having a cavity 22 therein, an inlet 11 for elutriating fluid adjacent the outer periphery of the cavity, an inlet 12 for the powdered solids to be classified, a coarse particle outlet 13 at the outer periphery of the cavity, a fine particle and elutriation fluid outlet 35 adjacent the axis of the cavity and a plurality of first members 45a mounted in the cavity for rotation relative to a plurality of second members 46 to act in shear on agglomerated fine solids moving outwardly towards the coarse particle outlet 35 so as to disperse them into discrete particles. In the embodiment shown, the first members 45a are in the form of annular rings of circumferentially-spaced fin members defined by radially spaced, axially extending slots 45 formed in circumferentially spaced fins 32, 33 secured to a rotor 30, 31. The second members 46 are radially spaced, axially extending rods affixed in the part 21 of the housing and projecting into the slots 45. The outlet 35 is formed by openings in a hollow drive shaft 14 for the rotor. In a modification, the rotor is made up of two halves rotating in opposite directions with fin members on one half intermeshing with fin members on the other half. The particle inlet is located at the centre of a hollow shaft in one of the halves of the rotor and the particles to be separated are led through a passage way in the body of that rotor half to a radial position corresponding to that occupied by inlet 12 in Fig. 1 at which point the particles empty into the space between the two rotors.
