1318776 Surgical blade handle R C BASSETT 25 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 40890/70 Heading B4K A surgical blade handle comprises a handle tube 28 having a socket end 27 with a slot therein, a surgical blade holder 20 projecting through the slot and a clamping rod 30 in screw threaded engagement with handle tube 28 and having an end 30A to engage end 29 of the blade holder so that the blade holder can be moved in the said slot and held in any angular position therein. A surgical blade (24), Fig. 1 (not shown) fits into groove 22 and against either face 23A or face 23B dependent if it is assembled for right hand or left hand use. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, the surgical blade holder comprises two jaws 37, 38. The jaws are held apart by spring 39 so that when a blade is placed between them they have to be manually closed so that keys 41, 43 engage in recesses 42, 44. When rod 30 is tightened the interaction between the ends of the jaws pivots jaw 37 counterclockwise. Also jaw 38 moves forward so that edges 41A, 43A and walls 42A, 44A engage to produce a camming action to move the jaws together. Thus the jaws are firmly clamped together. Rod 30 has a spacer flange 34 to prevent buckling thereof. The slot in socket end 27 allows the blade holder to pivot at least 180 degrees.
