Abstract

1318351 Laminates NORTON CO 29 April 1969 [6 May 1968] 21893/69 Heading B5N [Also in Division F3] A composite armour panel comprises a ceramic face plate secured to a metal backing plate. The face plate may be of boron carbide, 0À7 in. thick, and the backing plate of aluminium alloy, 0À5 in. thick, the two plates being secured together by means of a high temperature adhesive such as a modified acrylic phenolic solution or a polysulphide bond material. A panel of this construction will defeat impact by a À50 calibre armour piercing bullet and withstand temperatures of up to 400‹ F, and is suiable as armour for helicopter engines. During the initial few microseconds after impact, the projectile fractures the ceramic and the ceramic fractures the projectile. When the fracture process has been completed, the backing plate begins to yield, going into a tensile stress condition and continuing to yield until it has been deformed adequately to absorb all the kinetic energy of the fractured ceramic and projectile.
