Abstract

1318007 Liquid crystal display devices BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [26 March 1970] 25198/71 Heading G5C [Also in Divisions G1 and H4] A device for displaying in analogue form the value of an applied voltage V M consists of glass substrates 1 and 2 supporting film electrodes (e.g. tin oxide) 4 and 4<SP>1</SP>, between which is a layer 3 of a liquid crystal medium having an optical characteristic I which shows abrupt variation with potential difference above a threshold value. The film 4<SP>1</SP> has a much greater surface resistivity than the film 4, and opposite ends are connected to earth and to a fixed potential V 2 respectively, so that the potential distribution has the form shown in Fig. 3(a). To the conductive film 4 is applied a fixed potential V T plus the voltage V M , giving a potential distribution across film 4 as shown for two values of V M in Fig. 3(c). The material 3 is such that for a threshold voltage U T , I abruptly changes; thus all the material with x < x M (Fig. 3(d)) will, for an applied voltage V M , have a value of I considerably different from that of the material for x > x M . Optionally the voltage V M may be applied to contact 6, Fig. 4 (not shown), or the potential on one film may vary two-dimensionally, Fig. 2 (not shown).
