Abstract

1316959 Rolling mills DAVY & UNITED ENG CO Ltd 18 Sept 1970 [26 Sept 1969] 47611/69 Heading B3M The roll gap between a pair of vertical rolls 12, 13 is varied according to a predetermined pattern during the rolling of a slab 25 such that when the slab is subsequently rolled in a horizontal roll stand its width will be constant throughout its length. The normal taper which is produced at the leading and trailing ends of the slab during edging is eliminated by moving the rolls 12, 13 together slightly the two ends are rolled. The rolls 12, 13 are normally set by screws 16, 17 (Fig. 1) and are balanced by springs 23. Hydraulic capsules 21, 22 are connected to a control cylinder 27 to allow adjustment of the rolls whilst rolling the slab. As the leading end of the slab passes the rolls, the roll gap is slightly wider than normal but as the first few inches of the slab are rolled, the rolls are moved together to their normal position. They are moved by operation of a motor driven piston 28 which forces hydraulic fluid into the capsules 21, 22. The speed of the motor is controlled according to the slab rolling speed, and stops 34, 35 determine the stroke of the piston. The speed may be constant or may depend on the position of a transducer 37 which is related to the gap between the rolls. The motor may alternatively be controlled by a closed loop system incorporating a transducer 37 and a scanning photo-cell for locating the position of the slab. The rolls can be controlled in a similar manner as the end of the slab is rolled. One capsule instead of two may be employed. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2, the roll positions are controlled by valves 46, 47 which supply fluid to the roll carriers 14, 15. The valves are operated in response to output signals from amplifiers 51, 52. The output signals are derived from inputs relating to the positions of the rolls, the nominal spacing of the rolls, and the required speed of change of the roll gap. The latter signal is provided by a generator 56 providing a ramp voltage, the signal being initiated by a device 57 responsive to a closed loop system can be used, with the signal on line 60 being derived from a slab position transducer.
