1316851 Apparatus and process for making diapers O BLOMDAHLS BIL-& MEKANISKA AB 1 July 1970 31981/70 Heading ASR A method of manufacturing diapers, compresses for sanitary towels and the like comprises the steps of disintegrating cellulose material, discharging this fluffy mass onto a continuously advanced air permeable web, causing it to be deposited in a layer on the centre portion of the web by means of a flow of air sucked through the web, folding the marginal portions of the web inwards such that they overlap and cutting the strand thus formed in a transverse direction into lengths and closing these at their ends. Apparatus for carrying out these steps comprises a cylindrical rotatable drum I having a jacket having a circumferentially perforated centre portion. Inside the drum is a stationary funnel member 6, having an opening beneath a disintegrating apparatus 3, e.g. a hammer mill, the member 6 being connected at 7 to a source of vacuum. A web 11, preferably of paper is continuously advanced with its centre portion over the perforated portion of the drum, a layer of crushed cellulose being deposited on the said portion of the web which layer and web passes under a compressor roller 13, onto a conveyer belt 14 past a device 15 for applying adhesive to one margin of the web, and past folder rails 17 for folding both marginal portions inwards such that they overlap. The strand thus formed passes between drive and press rollers 18 and is cut into suitable lengths 20 by a device 19. A second web 22 may be used in addition, and in a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the cylinder is replaced by an endless belt (23).
