Abstract

1316771 Loud-speakers S YANDO 10 June 1970 [19 June 1969] 28130/70 Headings H4J and H4X A loud-speaker (diagrammatically represented by a disc 16) Fig. 1, is mounted in an air-tight cabinet 10 in which a free piston 13 is sealingly mounted by an elastic membrane 14. Sound emitted from the free piston 13 augments that emitted by the loud-speaker 16 over a predetermined low frequency range. There may be several free pistons and these may resonate at different frequencies. A substantially rigid shell (not shown), substantially encloses the cabinet 10, has an opening adjacent the loudspeaker 16 to radiate the acoustic output of the system, and acts to augment the power output of the system over the low frequency range. Preferably the enclosed volume of air in the cabinet 10 is substantially isobaric over the low frequency range. A moving coil loudspeaker is used. In an alternative arrangement, the loudspeaker 316 Fig. 6, is sealingly mounted on a movable piston 313 forming a front cabinet wall which is sealed to the remainder of the cabinet 310 by an elastic membrane 314. In addition, a portion of the rear wall 325 of the cabinet may also be sealed by an elastic membrane 326. The mass of free piston 325 is then substantially equal to that of free piston 313 plus the magnetic structure and frame of the loudspeaker 316. The cross-sectional area of free piston 325 is substantially equal to that of free piston 313. The momenta of the pistons is thus equal but oppositely directed, thereby creating a dynamic balance which leaves the body of cabinet 310 quiescent and free of objectionable vibrations- The pistons resonate with the elastic stiffness of the dynamic system at one and the same frequency. The sealed cabinet 310 has standoffs 327 and is within an outer shell 328.
