Abstract
1314677 Carbon fibre reinforced die UNITED STATES BORAX & CHEMICAL CORP 18 Nov 1970 [18 Nov 1969] 56499/69 Heading C1A A hot pressing die, wherein hot pressing is defined as sintering a powdered material in a die under conditions of high temp. and pressure, is reinforced with carbon fibres which are wound round the periphery of a hollow former of carbon which former although a die has a strength insufficient to withstand hot pressing. The former or the fibres may be coated with resin before the former is wrapped and the resin may be cured and subsequently pyrolysed. Alternatively, the wrapped former may be impregnated with resin and pyrolysed as above. Exemplified resins are epoxy, phenolic or furanbased resins, or polyester resins. The resin may be pyrolysed by heating at a rate of from 5‹ to 20‹ C. per hour up to a temp. of 750‹ C. in an inert atmosphere.
