Abstract

1314542 Firing system REMINGTON ARMS CO Inc 29 April 1970 [7 May 1969] 20716/70 Headings F3A and F3C A firing system comprises a gun in which an annular gap 48, Fig. 2, is provided between the end of a reciprocable breech bolt 36 and the barrel 44, and a cartridge having a case which, on firing, is explosively and permanently deformed into the gap 48 so as to provide a seal preventing propellant gases from reaching a reciever 38. A ring 34 is provided for extracting the cartridge, or, in another embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), the ring is replaced by a groove (72) into which the cartridge casing is permanently deformed. The cartridge comprises a moulded propellant 50, a moulded, loose or liquid propellant 52, and a casing formed of polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, copper, brass, aluminium or steel. A plastics shotgun cartridge (Fig. 5, not shown) may be used instead of the cartridge shown.
