Abstract

1314327 Measuring conductivity of milk NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 29 June 1970 [30 June 1969] 28791/72 Divided out of 1314326 Heading G1N Bovine mastitis is detected by passing the milk from each teat into respective ones of four cells (15-18) where its electrical conductivity is sensed by coils (26-29) in respective arms of a bridge circuit Fig. 3, (not shown), the bridge becoming unbalanced to cause a lamp to glow if the milk from one teat has an abnormal conductivity due to mastitis. The four cells are arranged within a hemispherical member 10 having a central boss 25 and four radial barriers (21-24). Member 10 is attached by a bayonet catch 31 to the base which has a common outlet 19 under the boss 25. The inlet tubes (11-14) are arranged to cause the milk to swirl in the cells so that any foam rises away from the coils (26-29). The coils have their outer turns connected to the oscillator to reduce capacitative coupling and are all energized in the same sense to reduce inductive coupling. For cleaning, the apparatus is held upside down Fig.4, (not shown) and a detergent germicide is passed in through pipe 19 and impinges on the concave end of boss 25 to be scattered all over the cell surfaces.
