1314189 Tobacco-smoke filters R J REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO 30 June 1970 [30 June 1969 15 Aug 1969 13 Nov 1969 9 Feb 1970 19 Feb 1970] 31742/70 Heading A2C A filter for use with cigarettes &c, comprises an outer sleeve 31 radially spaced from an inner sleeve 28 defining a first smoke passageway therebetween, a smoke barrier 26a for the upstream end of the sleeve 28, a smoke impingement body 26b within the sleeve 28 and spaced radially inwardly therefrom downstream from the barrier 26a, a plurality of smoke accelerating perforations 30 in the sleeve 28, and a second smoke passageway 33a for passing smoke downstream after impingement against the surface of the body 26b. A cellulose acetate filter 27 may also be provided. In the embodiment shown one end 21a of a cigarette 21 is completely closed by the barrier 26a, perforations 24 in the cigarette wrapper 23 allowing smoke from the cigarette 21 to pass into the passageway 33, but in other embodiments the barrier is of smaller diameter than the end of the cigarette rod to allow smoke to be discharged axially therefrom and to pass thence, either via further perforations in the inner sleeve or directly, into the first smoke passage. The barrier 26a and body 26b are formed as a single solid plug. Various other forms of plug, including plugs with longitudinal grooves along part of their length, and different means for spacing the inner and outer sleeves, are also disclosed.
