Abstract

1313706 Hydraulic actuators LIR SpA LABORATORIO ITALIANO RECERCHE 13 May 1970 [14 May 1969J 23056/70 Heading F1D A hydraulic stepping motor comprises a cylinder 101 Fig.1 having n e.g., three selectively operable fluid feeds 113, 115, 117, stops 105, 107, 109, 111 on the inner wall of the cylinder, a main piston 121 mounted on a rod extending through the lower end of the cylinder, stops arranged axially along the piston rod, and formed by axially spaced portions 123, 127, 131, n-1 pistons 133, 135 freely mounted on piston rod portions 125, 129 for linear movement between respective pairs of the piston rod stops and cylinder wall stops: the arrangement being that the rod is linearly displaceable into a selected one of 2<n> positions by pressure fluid fed through a selected feed or combination of feeds and discharged from the cylinder through other feeds represented by 1 and 0 in the binary code system. Fig.1 shows system 0. 0. 0 wherein the rod is biased to its uppermost position by a spring 139 of thrust less than the downward force exerted by fluid-pressure when present against the upper annular face of piston 133. With system 0. 0. 1 i.e. pressure at 117 and exhaust at 113, 115 as shown in Fig. 2 piston 133 moves upwardly to abut stop 107 and piston 121 and its rod move downwardly until'the upper end of rod portion 125 abuts the upper end of piston 133. Piston 135 which is linked to piston 133 by a tie rod 137c is subjected to no force except gravity and may assume the position shown. On applying fluid-pressure to feed 115 only i.e., system 0. 1. 0 as shown in Fig.3 piston 135 is held against stop 111 and piston 133 is moved downwardly until the tie rod is fully extended at which position the piston rod is urged by spring 139 against the lower end of piston 133. The lower end of the rod extends from the cylinder slightly more than is shown in Fig.3. The remaining five systems 0. 1. 1, 1. 0. 0, 1. 0. 1, 1. 1. 0, 1. 1.1. are as in Figs. 4 to 8 (not shown).
