Abstract
1312997 Making rotary seals TOYO KOGYO KK and YOSHIWA KOGYO KK 11 Sept 1970 [13 Sept 1969(2)] 43663/70 Headings B3A and B3V [Also in Division F1] A method of making a cast iron apex seal for a rotary piston engine comprises preparing an elongate cast iron blank 1 having a width equal to or slightly larger than that of the desired apex seal, rapidly melting a portion 5 of the blank, quickly cooling and solidifying the molten portion and subjecting the blank to final working. By this method a very hard wearing surface, which has a chilled structure and contains a large proportion of cementite, is formed. This portion may have a hardness of up to 900 Vickers Hardness while the hardness of the lower part which may be at least one third of the height of the seal remains unaffected, i.e. about 370 Vickers Harness. An electron beam 3 is used to melt the surface, the beam being oscillated as the blank travels beneath it so that it follows a trace 4. Alternatively a laser beam, plasma, arc or other heating means may be used. The blank may be heat treated for stress relief prior to the final working operation, which comprises final finish cutting or grinding. The cast iron may be acicular cast iron.
