Abstract

1312692 Rear axle suspensions GENERAL MOTORS CORP 24 Sept 1970 [8 Oct 1969 (2)] 45480/70 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] A rear axle suspension unit comprises a coil spring 32 retained between seats 34, 36 and, within the coil spring, a plurality of fluid springs 38, 40, each fluid spring being secured at one end to one of the seats, and at the other end either to a position along the length of the coil spring (as with the spring 40) or to the other seat (as with the spring 38). The contraction of each fluid spring under sub-atmospheric pressure from pipe 70 causes a corresponding reduction in length of the coil spring. Since the fluid springs act in parallel they afford a larger range for level regulation (through valve 72, Fig. 1). The fluid springs are connected to the "other seat" by a tension cable 57, rods (Figs. 2 or 3, not shown) or a flexible sleeve (176, Fig. 5, not shown). The fluid spring 40 is connected to the coil spring by an end-plate 61 which conforms to a convolution of the coil spring. The fluid springs may be piston-cylinder instead of bellows.
