Abstract

1309396 Gasifying coal RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLENWERKE AG 8 June 1970 [25 Aug 1969] 27686/70 Heading C5E Coals having a high water content, e.g. lignite or brown coal, are partially gasified using the water in the coal as gasifying agent by heat produced by burning the solid residue of coal gasified by the process. The combustion gases may heat the gasification chamber externally, or may heat directly molten lead circulated between a heater and the chamber in which the coal directly contacts the molten lead, the coal in pulverulent form being blown into the bath by a gas, e.g. recycled product gas. The coal should be predried to a water content of about 40% b.w., and the degree of gasification should be about 60%, i.e. the gases should have a C.V. of about 60% of the C.V. of the coal, the residual water in the coal acting as the gasification agent. Predrying may be in a fluidized bed indirectly heated by the combustion gases, in a metal bath or in part of the externally heated gasification apparatus.
