Abstract
Smokeless coal agglomerates are produced by oxidizing agglomerates formed from a mixture of (i) fusible coal, (ii) pitch and optionally (iii) one or more coals in the range anthracite coals to fusing coals (the latter being bituminous coals containing more than 13% volatile matter which on heating become pourable) at a temperature which is below the distillation temperature of any constituent and which is between Tg and Tm, where Tg is the temperature at which the contraction of the fusible coal is at a maximum and Tm is the temperature at which the contraction of the fusible coal is at a maximum and Tm is the temperature at which contraction of the mixture is at a maximum, as shown by the curve of volume variation against temperature, Afnor Standard M11,004. Preferably the oxidation is effected with a gas containing 3-5% oxygen using a heating rate of 1 DEG to 8 DEG C. per minute. When (iii) is an anthracite coal (i) is preferably less than 1 mm. particle size and constitutes 5-40% of the mixture. The process may be carried out by passing the agglomerates on a horizontal conveyer through a furnace similar to that claimed in Specification 908,606. Examples disclose mixtures in the ranges (i) 12-45%, (ii) 7-75%, (iii) 48-80.5% heated to 330-425 DEG C., and a mixture (i) 93%, (ii) 7%.
