Abstract

1309081 Container closures STAR ALUMIMUM CO Ltd 12 June 1970 [21 June 1969] 31466/69 Heading B8C A container 10 is closed by a lid 18, the edge 23, 24 of the lid 18 being sandwiched between portions 11a, 12a, 12b of a flange on the container 10, and these portions being folded to the configuration shown in Fig. 4. The container is made of thin sheet material such as aluminium foil and the lid 18 is of foil, card, foil/paper or plastics film. Prior to closure the flange of the container 10 has a horizontal support portion (11, Figs. 3a-3c, not shown) and an upstanding portion (12) having a peripheral bead (13). The container 10 is placed in a female die member 14 of a press having a spring loaded pressure pad 15, a punch 16, and a spring loaded pressure ring 17. The lid 18 is then placed on the support portion (11) of the container flange and clamped in position by the pressure pad 15. The punch 16 is then lowered to successively effect the following operations: (1) An inclined surface 29 on the punch 16 partially folds the upstanding flange portion (12) over the lid 18. (2) The inclined face 29 folds the outer portions 23, 11a of the lid 18 and the support flangeportion (11) so that these portions are parallel to the partially folded upstanding flange-portion (12) and the lid-edge 23 is sandwiched between the flange-portions 11a, 12a. (3) A horizontal surface 22 on the punch folds the outer portion 12b of flange-portion (12) to overlie the portion 24 of the lid 18. The upper surface of the die 14 may be flat or serrated.
