Abstract
1308999 Automatic needle loom WILLIAM BYWATER Ltd 3 Dec 1971 [3 Sept 1970] 42181/70 Heading D1R An automatically controlled needleloom comprises a bed across which material is fed, a needle board which is reciprocated relative to the bed, a control unit which adjusts the bed by small increments towards the board to allow for needle wear and an activating means which is pre-set or automatically operated to activate said control means at predetermined intervals and for a predetermined duration. The control means may include means for varying the increments of adjustment of the bed. In the example the activating means is a counter A which records the number of reciprocations. When a predetermined number has been counted a motorised potentiometer C is rotated to a position set by an increment selector B, producing a voltage difference between potentiometer C and a second potentiometer D mounted on the bed. The voltage is amplified and used to drive an incremental motor which raises the bed until the voltage difference between the two potentiometers is zero. An alarm sounds when no further incremental displacements of the bed are possible. Alternatively the activating means may comprise a metering device which records the passage of material through the loom, a time clock or a tape reader into which is fed a tape detailing the frequencies and increments of bed movement.
