Abstract

1308433 Cleaning metal surfaces TOYO INK MFG CO Ltd 13 Jan 1971 [16 Jan 1970] 1750/71 Headings C7B and C7E Metal surfaces are cleaned by contacting them with the aqueous solution of alkali metal salts obtained by an alkali hydrolysis of an aqueous solution of formaldehyde cyanohydrin. The said alkali metal salts are those of glycolic acid, glycine, imino-diacetic acid and nitrilo- triacetic acid. Other components of the cleaning composition may include sodium hydroxide, sodium phosphate, diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid, and hexamethylene tetramine. The formaldehyde cyanohydrin may be prepared by reaction of formaldehyde with an alkali metal cyanide. The cleaning may be carried out by immersing the metal in a bath of the cleaning solution and applying an electric potential between it and another electrode immersed in the bath. Examples describe the cleaning of brass, steel and copper prior to electro-plating with copper and silver, zinc, and copper and nickel respectively.
