Abstract

[Also in Divisions C5 and C7] A surface, e.g. of ceramic or metal such as coppered brass or steel, is coated with a composition of discrete particles of a solid lubricant (e.g. of .001 to 40 microns diameter) dispersed in a metal, to make a dry lubricant coating for bearings, by the simultaneous electrophoretic deposition of negatively charged solid lubricant particles, e.g. of a fluorocarbon polymer, such as podytetrafluoroethylene (C 2 F 4 ), polyhexafluoropropylene C 3 F 6 ), polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyvinyl (idene) fluoride, C 2 F 4 -C 3 F 6 copolymer, vinylidene fluoride-C 3 F 6 copolymer, poly-trifluoropropylmethyldichlorosilane, fluorosilicone elastomers, polyfluoroaniline or C 2 F 4 -C 3 NO copolymer, MoS 2 , CuO or other oxides or sulphides, and electrodeposition of a metal, such as Cu, Ag, Au or Ni, from a single bath. The polarity of the surface is periodically reversed, e.g. made the cathode for 5-30 sees (eleotrodeposition) and the anode for 1-5 sees (electrophoresis); the current density for electrophoresis is 5 to 80% less than that for electrodeposition. For example, brass panels are ultrasonically degreased with C 2 Cl 4 , soaked in a Na 2 CO 3 -NaCN solution, electrocleaned in a solution of Na 2 CO 3 , Na 3 PO 4 , NaCN and NaOH with polarity reversal and agitation, neutralized in H 2 SO 4 solution, copper striked in a solution containing Cu(CN) 2 , NaCN, Na 2 CO 3 and Rochelle salt, again neutralized, and finally plated in a bath containing an aqueous solution of CuSO 4 , H 2 SO 4 and a dispersion of negatively charged colloidal PTFE particles acidulated with citric acid; a copper slab is used as counter-electrode.
