Abstract

1308423 Aldonic acids F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 13 May 1971 [13 May 1970] 14628/71 Heading C2C In a process for the preparation of an aldonic acid by the oxidation of a sugar alcohol with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a noble metal catalyst, the oxygen feed is controlled so that at the start of the reaction there is no excess of oxygen over that consumed, and the rate of consumption of the oxygen is maintained constant. The reaction takes plase in an aqueous alkaline medium preferably at a pH of 10 to 13, provided by alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, and the catalyst may be platinum, palladium or gold. Sugar alcohols may be ribose, sorbose, fuctose, glucose, arabinose, mannose, erythiose, sorbitol, heptose, mannitol and the ketals thereof. Examples describe the preparation of a 2,3:4,6-diketal of 2-oxo-gulonic acid from a 2,3:4,5-diketal of sorbose in either a batch or continuous process, specifically 2,3:4,6 - diacetone-2-oxo-1-gulonic acid.
