Abstract

PURPOSE: The oxidation of lactic acid with an oxygen-containing gas is effected using platinum and/or palladium and bismuth as a catalyst to produce efficiently title compound useful as an intermdeidate on the way of interanl metabolism, starting material of various kinds of physiologically active substances in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst of platinum and/or palladium and bismuth is used in the oxidation of lactic acid with an oxygen-containing gas to pyruvic acid. Usually, the catalyst is supported on an adequate carrier. The amount of the catalyst ingredients on the carrier is 0.5W10wt%, preferably 1W5wt% of noble metals and 0.5W10, preferably 1W5wt% of bismuth. Lactic acid is obtained readily from cyanic acid and acetaldehyde and its sodium salt is preferably used.
USE: The major starting material of L-triptophane, L-cistine and L-thyrosine.
