The knives perform a progressive cut of the material, may be toothed or notched, be radially adjustable and hollow ground and may be, e.g. of the forms in Figs. 3a ..d. Half shells 7 are mounted around the rotor axle 4. the diameter of these half shells determines the size limit for comminution. In a second embodiment two rotors 41, 42 cooperate with a central fixed knife 50 (which may be reversed when worn). In a further embodiment (not shown) the axle is split and bears flanges at the inner ends between which knives are secured.
