As shown, exhaust gas from the retort 1 passes through line 5, is mixed with air from blower 18 and burnt at 6. Part of the burnt gas passes by line 10 to washer-scrubber 9, which cools and detars it before it passes to blower 11 and (as cooling gas) by line 12 to retort 1. Another part of the gas from chamber 6 in line 8 is mixed with cooled and cleaned gas from line 13 and passed by blower 7 to retort 1 as heating gas. Any excess of gas from the chamber 6 passes by line 14 to a stack controlled by a butterfly valve 15. A by-pass line 5A may also be provided to take gas from the line 5 directly to the stack.
