1307273 Conveyer systems GEC-ELLIOTT MECHANICAL HANDLING Ltd 13 July 1971 [1 July 1970] 31903/70 Heading B7L In a power and free conveyer installation, each carrier trolley A, B and C has a driving dog 6 and is propelled along a supporting track 2 by engagement of the dog 6 with a pusher member 21 carried by a drive chain 22, and each trolley has a braking means 8 which is brought into operation automatically to arrest the movement of the trolley when the driving dog 6 is moved into the disengaged, non-driving position, which occurs when a roller 9 carried by a forwardly extending lever 7 pivoted to the trolley and to the dog 6 engages with a fixed cam plate 5 on an obstacle such as the preceding trolley or a work station. The braking means 8, carried by the lever 7, has a brake friction surface 15 mounted on a resilient member 14 to supply braking force by contact with the track 2. The shape of the cam plate 5 is such that progressively increasing braking force is applied during the initial stages of contact of the roller 9 with the cam plate 5, but braking force is reduced below its maximum value before a resilient ultimate stop 10 on the trolley contacts the cam plate 5. Each carrier trolley may have a hold-back device 16 to prevent the trolley from travelling faster than the chain 22 and each trolley may comprise several coupled trolley members, the leading member of which includes the dog 6.
