In a conveyer system in which load-carrying trolleys are propelled along a track by dogs carried by an endless chain travelling along a track disposed vertically above the trolley track and the dogs can be projected into or retracted out of the driving position means are provided between the chain and the trolley so that when the dog is in the inoperative position drive will continue to s be imparted to the trolley until the trolley i positively arrested and such stoppage of the trolley will not interfere with the continuous running of the driving chain. The endless chain 12 mounted on rollers 12<1> running on a track 11 carries driving dogs 13 normally upwardly biased to the inoperative position by a spring and moved into the driving position between a pair of pivotal members 19 on the trolleys by a ramp 14. The members 19 are pressed upwards at one end by springs 20 and when the trolleys, mounted on wheels 17 running on a track 10, are moved to a position in which the dog 13 disengages the members 19 freely rotatable rollers 15 carried by the chain 12 engage the members 19 to take up the drive. When the trolleys are stopped by manual, electric, hydraulic or other means the rollers 15 depress the members 19 and the chain 12 continues to move in the normal manner.
