Abstract
1306548 Isomerization of dichlorobutenes BP CHEMICALS Ltd 5 July 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 38125/70 Heading C2C One of 1,4 - dichloro - butene - 2 and 3,4- dichloro-butene-1 is isomerized to the other by contact with a mixture of copper naphthenate, a dinitrile, and either an acyclic carboxylic acid amide, a lactam or an N-alkylated derivative thereof. Nitriles specified are adiponitrile, dicyano-butenes, e.g. 1,4-dicyano-butene-2, and isophthalonitrile. Amides specified are formamide, acetamide, pyrrolidones and their N- alkylated derivatives. The process may be batchwise or continuous. The starting material may be the isomer mixture obtained by the chlorination of butadiene. The lower-boiling 3,4 - dichloro - butene - 1 can be distilled off from the isomerization reactor through a fractionating column. In this embodiment, a stream is removed from the bottom of the reactor to prevent accumulation of high boilers, the dichlorobutene content of this steam being recycled. To obtain the higher-boiling 1,4-dichloro-butene-2, the reactor steam is fed to a point near the base of a fractionating column, with a reboiler and the 1,4-isomer removed from a lower point. The overhead 3,4-dichlorobutene-1, and the catalyst-containing steam from the reboiler, are recycled to the reactor, a proportion of the catalyst-containing steam being removed for separate distillation to prevent accumulation of high boilers.
