Abstract

1306504 Rocket-assisted shell and igniter therefor IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 5 Oct 1970 [28 Oct 1969] 52768/69 Heading F3A [Also in Division C1] A rocket-assisted shell adapted to be launched from a tube by an auxiliary charge comprises an igniter 24 for initiating the rocket motor 18 a predetermined time after firing the shell. The igniter comprises an ignition charge 41 which is ignited through a time delay fuse 37 when the pressure of the gases from the auxiliary charge shear a pin 55 and drive a striker 51 into a percussion primer 46. A boost ignition charge 20, contained in a perforated aluminium container 19 to the rear of a diaphragm 22 enclosing the warhead 22a, facilitates ignition of the motor 18. The pressure of the gases from the motor causes a number of pins 60 to shear and the igniter to be expelled from the nozzle 12a. The nozzle is provided with an asbestos liner 15 and a graphite ring 16.
